Swimming Pool Water
Whether in a public swimming pool or your own pool in the garden: clean pool water is the basis for a relaxing swim. Germs enter the water through people or the environment, for example coliform bacteria as indicators of faecal contamination (faecal indicators).
Under favourable conditions or with insufficient disinfection, these germs multiply. Bathers take them in and can become infected. Pool water should therefore be tested for microbiological and chemical parameters.
Legal framework
Public swimming pools
Strict hygiene requirements apply to public swimming pools. Operators have pool water, clean water, filling water, filtrate and drinking water tested regularly and document the results. The tests cover, among other things, bacteria and other microorganisms, the pH value and the chlorine content.
The requirements are described in the German Environment Agency's recommendation "Hygiene requirements for swimming pools and their monitoring". In addition, drinking water from water dispensers and showers must be tested microbiologically on a regular basis in accordance with the German Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV).
Private pools
Owners of private pools are not legally obliged to test their water. Regular testing does, however, help to identify and fix problems early, before they become a health risk. Testing for bacteria and chemical parameters is therefore part of good pool maintenance.

Water Dispenser Analysis
For drinking water from water dispensers, which public facilities such as swimming pools must have tested regularly for bacteria under the German Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV).

- colony count 22 °C (CFU 22 °C)
- colony count 36 °C (CFU 36 °C)
- enterococci
Legionella Analysis
For drinking water in public bathing facilities, such as shower facilities. The German Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV) requires regular Legionella testing there.
Legionella are bacteria that live and multiply in water pipes. When showering or misting, the water is atomised into tiny droplets (aerosols) and inhaled. This is how the bacteria enter the lungs, where they can cause serious infections such as pneumonia or Legionnaires' disease.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to have my private pool tested?
No, there is no legal obligation for private pools. Testing is in your own interest, though: it shows whether harmful bacteria are present in the water and helps you fix problems early.
Which water is tested in public swimming pools?
Pool water, clean water, filling water and filtrate, as well as drinking water, for example from water dispensers and showers. You will find a suitable package for each of these above.
Can I extend a package?
